The plans are coming to life.
Right next to Volkspark Altona, Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld brings together top international research, university education and innovative companies with lively residential neighbourhoods. In addition to world-class science, the new 125-hectare urban space will also offer thousands of new flats, sports, leisure and shopping facilities as well as social meeting spaces – amenities that will benefit the immediate neighbourhood as well as Hamburg as a whole.
We've designed a meeting point just for this area, the neighbourhoods. The new Science City Info Centre is a meeting point and information centre open to everyone. It offers a hands-on, immersive experience of urban development and encourages discussion.

There are three main reasons why Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld isn't yet presenting itself with an extensive and highly professional exhibition.
As well as the limited budget and the plans, which are currently still at a very early stage, it was also about the 'gesture' to the neighbourhood.
Instead of showing finished plans, the SCHB was mainly focused on creating a central location, a meeting point for everyone, where interested parties can find out about the development of Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld and the many ways to get involved.
The space was provided. A former commercial space in the almost empty Einstein Centre. We developed a multifunctional concept within the limits of what was possible, which organises the space, creates different areas and thus enables different usage scenarios:
As well as the reception area, there’s a small office space with a kitchenette, a large area for workshops, lectures, discussions and competition presentations, and an exhibition area facing the street. This is dominated by a walkable floor graphic showing the entire planning area.
'Living next door to people who make atoms visible? Living where award-winning researchers are tracking dark matter? In Science City, this will become the new normal. Here, excellent science and the city of tomorrow mix in everyday life and become a vibrant part of Hamburg - green, diverse, barrier-free and seamlessly connected to the neighborhood. The new Science City Infocenter is a first showcase of this future. It is an open meeting place for everyone: for students, for international scientists and the entire neighborhood.'
Dr. Andreas Kleinau, CEO of Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld GmbH
We kept the space's sporadic character by not making too many changes. We knocked down a few walls, painted everything once, and optimized the lighting. But we did this very deliberately! The colour scheme was based on the corporate design with its main colours, petrol, mint, and anthracite. All the walls got a base coat of magenta paint, which was then coated with blackboard paint. This makes it possible to use virtually all wall surfaces interactively.
Unfortunately, the planned exhibition system made of structural steel mesh mats wasn't realised as an existing system was used instead.
The new meeting point has been open since June 2022 and is used for a wide range of information events relating to Science City. It's been a great success.
