ausstellung atelier hafencity

the first 16 designs

When the HAFENCITY project began more than 20 years ago, the area was characterized by noise, dirt, and port activity.

In 2003, we created an exhibition that explored how this desolate area could be transformed into a new, urban and vibrant community. 16 architects designed HAFENCITY, and the exhibition showcased current developments and future plans for the coming years.

The focus was not only on the project, but also on the architects' working methods and how they responded to the challenges of the site.

We deliberately tried to show the philosophy, the individual touch and the personality of the architects and to give an insight into the variety of architectural and artistic approaches.

The 800-square-meter space was designed to resemble a large design studio.

Various media from the everyday life of the architects created a lively showcase of different architectures, designs and philosophies. Among the 16 architectural offices were David Chipperfield, EMBT from Barcelona, Benthem Crouwel from Amsterdam, BRT and gmp from Hamburg.

From July to November 2003, up to 1,000 people visited the exhibition every day!
